In how many ways can we distribute 10 identical looking pencils to 4 students so that each student gets at least one pencil?
A. 5040
B. 210
C. 84
D. None of these

- first we distribute 4 pencils each 1 to 4 students. remaining pencils are 6. then ways of distributions are (n+r-1)C(r-1) here n=6 & r=4
hence 9C3=84

- Ans is:84
number of ways in which n identical objects can be divided into r groups
(n-1)c(r-1)
n=10,r=4
(10-1)c(3)=504/6=84

- A]becoz 5040 as all are identical so permutation ie...10*9*8*7=5040

- For any pair of positive integers n and k, the number of distinct k-tuples of positive integers whose sum is n is given by the binomial coefficient {(n - 1)C( k-1)}.
9C3 = 84

- For these type of identical items problems follow the rules
number of ways in which n identical objects can be divided into r groups
(n-1)c(r-1)
In this particular question n=10,r=4
so (10-1)c(3)=504/6=84

- Since the question is asking to find ways in which the pencil can be distributed thus we use factorial that is 10! = 10(10-1)(10-2)(10-3) = 5040
Hence 5040 ways is the answer - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- 10 identical pencils will be distributed among 4 students
So it should be (n-1)C(r-1)
Therefore, 9C3=84 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- 10 * 9 * 8 *7 (four spaces )=5040 . (As everybody should get 1 pencil and all pencils look similar .)
