Two candles have different lengths and thickness. The shorter lasts 11 hours and the longer 7 hours,when both are lit simultaneously. If after 3 hours of their being lit together at the same time, both have the same length, then what is the ratio of their original lengths?
Read Solution (Total 3)

- 11:14
Let x = length of the shorter candle
y = length of the longer candle
After 3 hours, length left of the
shorter = x - 3x/11 and of the
longer = y - 3y/7
As these lengths are equal,
x - 3x/11 = y - 3y/7
or 8x/11 = 4y/7
or x/y = (4/7) x (11/8) = 11/14
so ratio of lengths of the shorter candle to the longer candle = 11 : 14. - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(8) No(2)
- AFTER 3HOURS:SHORTER S=8/11 OF ORIGINAL
LONGER L=4/11 0F ORIGINAL
AS PER PROBLEM:8/11S=4/11L
=>S/L=1/2
RATIO IS :1:2 - 12 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(4)
- x - 3x/11 = y - 3y/7
or 8x/11 = 4y/7
or x/y = (4/7) x (11/8) = 11/14
