  father will complete the same work in (x-40) days.
  so (x-40)*5 = x * 1
  =>5x-200 = x
  =>4x = 200;
  =>x = 200/4 = 50
  if son completes the work in 50 days then the father will complete the same work in 40 days less, that mean in 10 days.
  per day father completes 5 parts. total work is 5*10 = 50 parts.
  per day son completes 1 part. total work is 5*1 = 5 parts.
  hence per day both father and son will complete (5 + 1)parts = 6 parts.
