  Now the only contenders are "was" and "has been".
  "was" can not be true because it would mean that the passion of collcting has ended, which isn't something we can be pretty sure about, also passion isn;t something that goes away so easily.
  Hence, "has been" is the correct answer as it means that it was their passion and is an ongoing thing.
