Age Problem
Six diesel engines consume 900 liters of diesel, when each one is running for 5 h a day. How much diesel will be required by 9 engines, each running 9 h a day when 5 diesel engines of former type consume as much diesel as 8 diesel engines of latest type?

- please look at the problem carefully ...there are two types of engines..
he says 6-eng take 900l for 5hrs [Type-1 eng]
he says 5-eng of type1 consume DIESEL same as 8-eng of type2 for the same hours
he is asking us how many liters are consumed by 9-eng of type-2 for 9 hours
SOL :
first let us find how many liters will 5-eng of type-1 consume when working for 5 hours
for 6-eng(type-1) -> 900 liters
then for 5-eng(type-1) -> x liters?
therefore x = (900*5)/6 = 750 liters
NOW .. it is clearly given that 8-eng(type2) consume same diesel as 5-eng(type1)
for 5 hours ...
therefore for 8-eng(type2) -> 750 liters
then for 9-eng(type-2)-> x liters ?
=> x = (750*9)/8 = 843.75 liters for 5 hours
when 9-eng of type-2 consume 843.75 liters for 5 hours then for 9 hours how much do they consume ?
for 5 hours -> 843.75 liters
for 9 hours -> x hours ?
therefore x = (843.75*9)/5 = 1518.75 liters (ANSWER)
hope you understood :)

- six engines of former type consumes 900lit for working 5hours
so, for 1hr-1engine needs (900/6*5)= 30lit
to find how much needed by 9latest engine for 9hrs,
from ques 5 of former type = 8 of latest type,
so, 5*30=150lit for 8 latest engines
for 1 latest engine 150/8=18.75lit
so for 9latest_eng working 9hrs = 18.75*9*9 = 1518.75 litre's
so answer is 1518.75 litre's :) - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(15) No(0)
- Given 6 engines consumes 900lit for 5hours from this 1engine consumes per 1 hour=(900/(6*5))=30lit
1 engine consume 30lit per hour------>(1)
Given that 5 old engines == 8 new engines----->(2)
using equation--->(2) 9 new engines == 5.625 old engines ---->(3)
so for 9 engines and 9 hours we need (5.625*30*9)=1518.75 from eqations(1)and(3)
So we need 1518.75liters. - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(4) No(1)

- six diesel engine consume 900 lt fr 5 hr running
fr 9hr running...900*9/5=1750...
1 diesel engine consume 1750/5=270 litre...
5 diesel engine consume 270*5 =1350...
so 8 engine consumes 1350 lt as given in ques 5 former engine= latest engine....so fr 9 engine..1350*9/8=1518.75 lt - 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- since the formula,
n1 X h1 X r1 / amount of diesel used by type 1 engine = n2 x h2 x r2 / amt of diesel by type 2
=> (6x5X1/5)/900 = (9X8X1/8)/x
on solving we get x=1350 litres
thats it :) - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
- ANS IS : 1518.75
6 DIESEL ENGINES CONSUME 900 LITERS OF DIESEL,WHEN EACH ONE IS RUNNING FOR 5H DAY
5 ENGINES CONSUMES=900*5/6=750 LITERS OF DIESEL,WHEN EACH ONE IS RUNNING FOR 5H DAY
8 ENGINES CONSUMES=750 LITERS,WHEN EACH ONE IS RUNNING FOR 5H DAY
9 ENGINES CONSUMES=750*9/8=843.75 LITERS,WHEN EACH ONE IS RUNNING FOR 5H DAY
ANSWER IS:
9 ENGINES CONSUMES=843.75*9/5=1518.75 LITERS,WHEN EACH ONE IS RUNNING FOR 9H DAY
