X and Y can do a piece of work n 20 days and 12 days respectively. X started the work alone and then after 4 days Y joined him till the completion of work. How long did the work last?

- To simplify, Let the work be 60 units(L.C.M of 20 and 12)
X can complete in one day=60/20=3units
Y can complete in one day=60/12=5Units
Both together can complete in one day=8units
Since X has completed 4 days of work, he must have completed 12 units of work
The remaining work that is 48 units of work has to be completed by both together

work left=1-1/5=4/5
now (x+y)1 day work=(1/12+1/20)=8/60
