Arithmetic
Alok and Bhanu play the following min-max game. Given the expression
N = 9 + X + Y - Z, where X, Y and Z are variables representing single digits (0 to 9), Alok would like to maximize N while Bhanu would like to minimize it. Towards this end, Alok chooses a single digit number and Bhanu substitutes this for a variable of her choice (X, Y or Z). Alok then chooses the next value and Bhanu, the variable to substitute the value. Finally Alok proposes the value for the remaining variable. Assuming both play to their optimal strategies, the value of N at the end of the game would be
option
a) 0
b) 27
c) 18
d) 20
Read Solution (Total 7)
-
- ans is c)18
alok initially choose 9 bhanu substitute this to z(bcos she wants to min it)
so n=9+x+y-9--->n=x+y
next alok chooses a value and bhanu substitute this in a variable,Alok proposes the value for the remaining variable.
n=9+9=18
so ans is c)18 - 14 years agoHelpfull: Yes(28) No(36)
- alok first chooses 7
then bhanu assumes it as maximum and place z=7(chances)(think once)
next alok chooses 9 and 9 bhanu replaces them at x and Y respectively..
==>n=9+9+9-7=20

- 18
already solved previously - 14 years agoHelpfull: Yes(2) No(21)
- He wont choose 9 in the starting bcoz he knews that bhanu will keep that number in z soo he will choose lesser number than 9 like 7 etc
- 11 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(1)
- because X+Y-Z=11
so, N=20 - 9 years agoHelpfull: Yes(0) No(0)
