Given Series is 1,2,4,13,31,112,...

Actually the series is 1,2,4,8,16,32,....

convert these numbers into the base 5.

it means ......

1 - 3

5 | 16
-----
3 - 1

5 | 32
-----
5 | 6 - 2
----
1 - 1

5 | 64
----
5 | 12 - 4
----
2 - 2

So this series going like.. 1, 2, 4, 13, 31, 112, 224, 1003,.....

Ans is 174
2-1=1=(3^0=1)
4-2=2=(2^2-2=2)
13-4=9=(3^2=9)
31-13=18=(2^4+2=18)
112-31=81=(3^4=81)
next term will be
x-112=2^6-2
x=64-2+112
x=174

4,13,31 13-4=7, 31-13=2(9)
31,112,? 112-31=81, ?-112=2(81)
?=274

actually the series is 1,2,4,8,16,32.....so on
this is converted to base 5
so the next term is 224..

difference b/w 1,4,31 are multiple of 9
so difference b/w 2,13,next is also multiple of 9
