12 hrs=360 degree
for hour hand 1hr=30degree -->60min=30 degree -->40min=20 degree
for minute hand 60min =360 degree -->40min=240 degree
angle between hour hand and minute hand =240-20=220 degree
or 360-220=140

just the simple solution.
when min hand is on 40 the angle is subtended =240
and we know that hour hand move 1/2 degree per min so in 40 min it moved 40/2 =20 degree so angle would be 240-20=220 so its reflex angle would be 360-220=140
there is no need of formula

ans is:220
as the hour hand is in h=12
and minute hand is in m=40
apply the formulae= (11/2)m-30h
then it gives 140 but for reflex(ans is negative)
it is 360-140=220
don`t worry about the m>h or h>m it will either give ans

formula:
angle= 30*Hours-(11/2)*Minutes
so 30*12-(11/2)*40=360-220=140 ans

clock is 360 degree circle
angle cover by hour hand in (12 hrs 40 min) =38/3 is (360/12)*(38/3)= 380
angle cover by minute hand in 40 min is (360/60)*40=240
so angle between hh and mh is (380 - 240) = 140

12 hrs=360 degree
for hour hand 1hr=30degree -->60min=30 degree -->40min=20 degree
for minute hand 60min =360 degree -->40min=240 degree

Angle traced by hour hand in 12 hours is 360 degree
So, angle traced hour hand in 40 min is (40/60*360/12)= 20 degree

Angle traced by minute hand in 60 min is 360 degree
so, angle traced by minute hand in 40 min is (40*360/60)= 240 degree

Angle between the hour and minute hand is 240 - 20 = 220 degree

Direct fOrmila to find out the ANGLE BETWEEN Hands of a clock is
M(11/2)-30H= Angle between hands.
(11/2)*40-30*12=140

hour hadle can make 1 degree for every 12 degrees of minute handle.
time at 12:40 , minute handle make 240 degrees,at that time hours handle can do 17.5 degrees.so 240-17.5=222.5

60mins=360degree
now 1mins=360/60=6degree
in each 12mins the hour handle moves 6degree
becoz the diffrence b/w 12 to 1 is 5 dots & hour handle takes time to move each 5dots 60mins.hour handle moves 1dot in 60/5=12mins passing by the mins handle.
so to cover 40 mins the hour handle moves 3dots(40/12=3 & some remainder)so the remaining two mins=2/12=0.17mins.i.e 0.17*6=1.02degree.
so actual angle=240-(3*6+1.02)=220.98degree.

from 12 to 12:40 minute hand moves 240 deg(180+60) deg [if hour hand stayed at 12th chamber], cause each division has 30 deg
by the time minute hand reaches 8th chamber hour hand moves towards 1st chamber 20 deg

cause
at 12:30 it moves (30deg/2) =15 deg in 30 minutes
at 12:40 it moves (40deg/2) =20 deg in 40 minutes
at 1 o clock it moves (60deg/2)=30 deg in 60 minutes----> that is the 30 deg movement from 12th to 1st chamber of the hour hand ,,,,


So, we had 240 deg,,

now [240-20]=220 deg
ans is 220 deg or 140 deg ...

Consider 12 as 12 and 40 as 8 (8*5=40)
Now
1). 12-8 = 4 => 4* 30º = 120º
2). 40º/2 = 20º => Now add both angles i.e., 120º + 20º = 140º (Which is of CCW)
3) In CW then 360º - 140º = 220º.
