What is the smallest number of articles in the bag satisfying these conditions? How

let no. of periodicals be p, novels be nl, newspaper be np and hardcovers be h.

Then, pC1 = (nl C 1) * (p C 3) = (np C 1) * (nl C 1) * (p C 2) = (p C 1) * (nl C 1) * (np C 1) * (h C 1)

from the above equation we get,
4nl = p-3
3np = p-2
2h = p-1

Now, find the value of p (by trial and error method) which satisfies all the three equations above
We get, p=11
from above three equations, p=11, nl=2, np=3, h=5
