Let x be the no of oranges

After 1st time, no of oranges remaining = x - 0.5 - (x/2) = (x - 1)/2
After second time , remaining = (x - 1)/2 - 0.5 - (x -1)/4 = (x - 3) / 4
After 3rd time , remaining = (x - 3)/4 - 0.5 - (x - 3)/8 = (x - 7)/8

Remaing oranges after 3rd time = 0
=> x = 7

If he didn't use knife means no of oranges = an odd number

Do the reverse calculation
3rd time, no. of orange = 2*(0+1/2)=1
2rd time, no. of orange = 2*(1+1/2)=3
1rd time, no. of orange = 2*(2+1/2)=7
Ans = 7 oranges
