There are 6 beer bottle nd one is poisoned. we have mice who will die within 14 hrs after drinkin poisned beer. In 24 hrs we have to find poisoned beer bottle. How many no of mice we require to find out poisoned bottle.

Solution

If mouse would die exactly after 14 hrs then definitely 1 will be the answer but here the given condition says that mouse will die within 14 hrs.
so this question will be solved by set theory.
answer is following
total beer bottles = 6
drinking strategy
bottle1 : mouse1
bottle2 : mouse2
bottle3 : mouse3
bottle4 : mouse1 and mouse2
bottle5 : mouse2 and mouse3
bottle6 : mouse3 and mouse1
on the basis of death of mice set we can decide the poisoned bottle

in this question upto 2 bottle answer will be 1 because 2^1 = 2
similarly upto 4 bottles answer will be 2 because 2^2 = 4
for upto 8,16,32,64,128 bottles answer will be 3,4,5,6,7

The answer is 4 as "Jeffrey" has said

Mouse 1 drinks= 1,2,3 Mouse 2 = 4,5,6 Mouse 3 = 1,4 Mouse 4 = 3, 6

Bottle 1 poisoned M1 & M3 Die
Bottle 2 poisoned M1 dies,
Bottle 3 poisoned M1 & M4 die,
Bottle 4 poisoned M2 & M3 die,
Bottle 5 poisoned M2 dies,
Bottle 6 poisoned M2 & M4 die.
As each outcome is different for each bottle you know immediately which is the poisoned bottle.

IT IS NOT "1"
The question says "within" 14 hours. It does not state "after" 14 hours. Say you gave the mouse a drop from each bottle in hourly intervals hour 1 through to hour 6 and then the mouse dropped dead after 9 hours - which bottle is poisoned? You can't possibly tell!

bottle1 : mouse1
bottle2 : mouse2
bottle3 : mouse3
bottle4 : mouse1 and mouse2
bottle5 : mouse2 and mouse3
bottle6 : mouse3 and mouse1.........so answer is 3mice required to test the poisoned bottle
