As 'x' item costed Rs 12000.
1 item cost = Rs(12000/x)
Condition ---> each item reduced by Rs 30, so each item cost = Rs(12000/x - 30)
No. of item increases by 50 so, x+50
therefore,

(12000/x - 30)*(x+50) = 12000
x = 118 apprx.
Initially Thomas bought 118 item later he bought (118 + 50) = 168 item.

if each item is cheaper by 30rs
then the remaining money would be 30*x;
so with 30x he can be bought 50 items
in each item saved money would be (12000/x)-30
in x items saved money would be x*((12000/x)-30)
with this money he can buy 50 items so
12000-30x=50;
x=398.33
