2 chances.
Split 9 balls in to 3,3,2.
1)1st weigh both 3 balls. if it is equal then it is present in the rest of the two balls. we can easily detect from that two.
2)If it is present in any of the 3 balls,
then split that again in to 1,1,1;
now weigh any two balls.... if it is equal, the rest is defective.
