Total distance covered in 8 hrs = 20.5+16*6-8*2=100.5
100.5= 1.5*n+8*(n-1),where n is the no.of stairs.
so,n=11.42 (approx 11 stairs)

how that 20.5 came?

3 step of a ladder is immersed in water .if thickness of the steps is 1.5” and distance between the steps is 8

diastance b/n ladders is 8 means b/n 3 ladders disatance is 8+8=16
and thickness is 1.5 i.e., 1.5*3=4.5
total distance is 16+4.5=20.5 okay

ans=5
distance immersed in 3 steps=20.5
after 6 hrs distance covered =20.5+36=56.5=7steps
then for 2hrs tide ebbs at the rate of 8 per hr=56.5-16=50.5
so 5 steps will be immersed

i really cant get it... there is already mention that it is a 3spet ladder... how u people are finding there ans more than 3... there is somthing worng in parameter of the value given....
