Q. My friend owns a horse-driven carriage. It was found that the fore wheels of the carriage make four more revolutions than the hind wheel in going 96 feet. However, it was also found that if the circumference of the fore wheel was 3/2 as great and of the hind wheel 4/3 as great, then the fore wheel would make only 2 revolutions more than hind wheel in going the same distance of 96 feet. Can you find the circumference of each wheel?

Ans. Circumference of Fore wheel is 8 feet and that of hind-wheel is 12 feet.
Let z and y be the circumferences of fore and hind wheels respectively.
Then 96/x = 96/y + 4
and 96*2/3x = 3*96/4y + 2
solving these two equations we get x = 8 and y = 12
i.e fore and hind wheels will have circumferences 8 and 12 respectively.
So fore and hind wheels will make respectively 12 and 8 revolutions
i.e fore wheels make 4 more revolutions than the hind wheel in going 96 feet.
When the circumference of the fore wheel was 3/2 as great and of the hind wheel 4/3 as great, then fore and hind wheels will have circumferences 12 and 16 respectively.So fore wheel would make only 2 revolutions more than hind wheel
in going the same distance of 96 feet.
