Using the numerical equivalent of alphabets, we have the following

A=1 P=15 L=12 and E=5

we start at this pattern

-A^2 + P^2 - P^2 + L^2 - E^2

= -(1)^2 + (16)^2 - (16)^2 + (12)^2 - (5)^2
= -1 + 256 - 256 + 144 - 25 = 118

for MONKEY, M=13, O=15, N=14, K=11, E=5 and Y=25 (large numbers XD)

so the formula would be

-(13)^2 + (15)^2 - (14)^2 + (11)^2 - (5)^2 + (25)^2
