less than 1000

squares: 1^2,2^2,3^2,4^2,......,31^2 (as 32^2=1024)
cubes: 1^3,2^3,3^3,....,9^3 (as 10^3=1000)

also, 1^2=1^3, 8^2=4^3, 27^2=9^3

total no. less than 1000 which are square or cube = 31 + 9 - 3 = 37
total no. less than 1000 = 999

Total no.s which are neither square nor cube of a number less than 1000
= 999-37
=962

ans: 962

less than 1000

squares: 1^2,2^2,3^2,4^2,......,31^2 (as 32^2=1024)
cubes: 1^3,2^3,3^3,....,9^3 (as 10^3=1000)

also, 1^2=1^3,8^2=4^3, 27^2=9^3
3 numbers matching. i.e., 2^2 !=2^3 [2^2=4,2^3=8]

total no. less than 1000 which are square or cube = 31 + 9 - 3 = 37
total no. less than 1000 = 999

Total no.s which are neither square nor cube of a number less than 1000
= 999-37
=962

ans: 962
