Susan made a block with small cubes of 6 cubic cm volume to make a block 6 small cubes long: 8 small cubes wide and 10 small cubes deep. She realises that she has used more small cubes than she really needed. She realised that she could have glued a fewer number of cubes together to look like a block. with same dimensions: if it were made hollow. What is the minimum number of cubes that she needs to make the block?

Solution

Total cubes in present case = 6*8*10
total number of cubes in inner part of cube = (6-2)*(8-2)*(10-2)
so minimum cubes required = [6*8*10] - [(6-2)*(8-2)*(10-2)] = 288
