in 'books are old' and 'man is old' 'old' and '5' is common. similarly in 'books are old' and 'buy good books' 'books' and '3' is common. in 253 '2' remains i.e 2='are'

in 253 and 546 old is common so old=5
in 253 and 378 books is common so books=3
so 'are'=2

books are old as- 253 ---eq1
man is old as- 546 -------eq2
buy good books as-378 ----eq3
so comparing eq1 and eq3 we get code for books as 3.
and comparing eq1 and eq2 we get code for old as 5.
now compare again equation 1 with the given code...and code for "are" is --2.

answer is 2 because in 253 and 546 we have 5 common that means 5 stands for "old". now between 253 and 378, 3 is common that means 3 stands for "books" now in first code 253 only 2 is left that means 2 is for "are"

From 1 &2 number 5 is common and word old is common so 5=old
1------> 253=books are old
3-------378= buy good books
from 1& 3 number 3 is common and word books is common so 3=books
so in statement 1 only left number is 2 and word is are so 2=are

explanation:- "books are old" and "man is old" common part is old so in that 253 and 546 common no is 5 so old=5. Next "books are old" and "buy good books" common part is books so 253 and 378 common is 3 i.e.., books=3 so are=2

so comparing all the three we get


"old" as 5
"books" as 3
"are" as 2
wheras

there is uncertainity regarding "man" and "is" which is either 4 or 6

and "buy" and "good" which may be either 7 or 8

but the answer comes up as they ask the code for "are"...

now 3 and books are common in 1st and 3rd code so 3=books
so only left 2 and are in 1st code so are=2
