Multiples of 8 between 1 and 999: 8(1), 8(2), . . . , 8(124) = 992
Multiples of 12 between 1 and 999: 12(1), 12(2), . . ., 12(83) = 996
Multiples of 8 and 12 between 1 and 999: 24(1), 24(2), . . ., 24(41) = 984

There are a total of 999 - (124 + 83 - 41) = 833 numbers between 1 and 999 that are not divisible by 8 or 12.
