idols, each of Ram, Shiv, Vishnu and Durga. The priest plucks x flowers
from the garden and places them in the pond. The number of flowers
doubles up, and he picks y flowers out of them and goes to offer it to
Lord Ram. By the time he reaches to the pond, he finds the remaining
flowers also have doubled up in the meantime, so he again picks up y from
the pond and goes to Lord Shiv.This process is repeated till all the Gods
have y flowers offered to them, such that in the end no flower is left in
the pond. Find x and y.

let initial flowers=x
dey get double up that is nw we get 2x
let y flowers be offered to GOD 1
remaining are 2x-y which doubled that is 4x-2y
again y flowers offered to GOD 2
remainin are 4x-3y which doubled again that is 8x-6y
again y flowers offered to GOD 3
remainin are 8x-7y which doubled again that is 16x-14y
again y flowers offered to GOD 4
remainin are 16x-15y

no flowers shud b left after
therefore 16x-15y=0
--> x/y=15/16

so x=15 n y =16 atleast

15*2=30,16 offer to god1
14*2=28,16 offer to god2
12*2=24,16 offer to god3
8*2=16,16 offer to god4
0 left

ANS : (x,y) = (15n,16n) where n is any +ve integer.

REASON :
Flowers plucked from garden = x
flowers offered to each God = y

Initially it doubles to 2x
when y flowers are offered to first God, 2x-y flowers remain.
it doubles to 2(2x-y) = 4x-2y flowers.
when y flowers are offered to second God, 4x-2y-y = 4x-3y flowers remain.
it doubles to 2(4x-3y) = 8x-6y flowers.
when y flowers are offered to third God, 8x-6y-y = 8x-7y flowers remain.
it doubles to 2(8x-7y)= 16x-14y flowers.
when y flowers are offered to Fourth God, 16x-14y-y = 16x-15y flowers remain.
But we know that, after offering to the fourth God no flowers remain.
Therefore 16x-15y = 0. or 16x = 15y or x/y = 15/16

Also x/y = n*15/n*16 [dividing and multiplying by n]

since x and y are to be counnting no.s or +ve integers,
x = n*15 and y = n*16 where n is any +ve integer.
for same value of n for both x and y.
Therefore the possible values of x and y are 15,16 or 30,32 or 45,48 ...and so
on.

14-8=6 remaining 6*2=12 offered 8 to ram

after passing y to Shiv 4*X-3*y in pond--->8*X-6*y
after passing y to Vishnu 8X-7y in pond-->16X-14y

and given 16X-15y=0
pick X=15
Y=16

priest rings x=15 flowers and offers y=16 flowers to all 4 gods. 2x=30 then -16 for 1st god = 14,again 2*14 =28-16(for 2nd god)=12, now 12*2=24-16(for 3rd god)=8, now 8*2 =16 -16(for forth god) .thus ends with zero.

P=no. of flowers picked up
R=remaining flowers

accordingly,16x-15y should be zero.So 16x=15y,therefore the solution is x=15*k
&y=16*k.where k=1,2,3,4,..............

Another approach to solve it: start backwords:
0 then y then y/2 then y/2+y then (y/2+y)/y and so on...

final equation: (((y/2+y)/2+y)/2+y) = x

solve it to get x/y = 15/16

therefore: x = 15 and y = 16

15*2=30,16 offer to god1
14*2=28,16 offer to god2
12*2=24,16 offer to god3
8*2=16,16 offer to god4
0 left

then it again become twice that is 2*(2x-y)
again removing y flowers it became 2*(2x-y)-y

again become twice 2*[ 2*[2*(2x-y)-y]-y]
removing y flowers it become 2*[ 2*[2*(2x-y)-y]-y]-y
now total no.of flowers became zero that is 2*[ 2*[2*(2x-y)-y]-y]-y=0
solving we get ratio of x and y :: 15 and 16 respectively
therefore x and y would be in ratio 15 and 16 respectively
