Rita puts 9 pairs of black socks and 8 pairs of white socks in a drawer. She takes 3 socks. What is the probability that we get a pair of black socks?

Solution

total socks = 18+16 = 34
total possibilities = 34*33*32/3*2*1 = 5984
favorable events = select 2 black + all 3 black
= (18*17/2*1)(16/1)+ (18*17*16)/(3*2*1)
= 2448 + 816
= 3264
So Probability = 3264/5984 = 6/11 = 0.54545
