The ratio of two numbers is 5:6. If a number is added to both the numbers the ratio becomes 7:8. If the larger number exceeds the smaller number by 10. Find the number added.
A. 30
B. 10
C. 20
D. 40
E. Cannot be determined

Solution
let the numbers are 5x and 6x. Let the number added is y so 5x+y/6x+y = 7/8
and 6x-5x = 10 implies x = 10
taking x=10, 50+y/60+y = 7/8 implies 400+8y = 420+7y or y = 20 (c)
