there is mistake in question . covered by him was 5/7 of the remaining distance.

d represents the remaining distance

5d/7 represents the distance covered



d + 5d/7 = 24 multiply both sides by 7

7d + 5d = 168 combine like terms

12d =168 divide both sides by 12

d = 14



5(14)/7 = 10



The first 10 km were covered in 1:40.



His rate is



10km /1:40 convert hour/minutes to seconds (1 hour = 3600 seconds)

10km/6000sec convert km to m

10000m/6000sec reduce

10m/6sec reduce

1.66m/sec
