Let the no. of men be 'X'
Then the no. of man-days(no. of men* no. of days) is always equal for a work
For 17 days, the people working are X
After 17 days, 300 are added to X, so the no. of men is now (300+X)
And the no. of days is reduced by 21,so the (300+X ) people will work for (52-17-21) days
So
X*52=(X*17) + (X + 300)*(52-17-21)
Hence the ans is X=200 men were working initially

52 days ----->x men
after 17 days --->300 men added
52-17=35----->(x+300) remaining work
and 21 daysreduced after adding 300 men
so for 35-21=14
by this we have
35--->(x+300)
14---?x
by cross multiplicatin we get
14x+4200=35x
21x=4200
x=200

If 'x' men were working initially, their 1 day work=1/52, so 1 men 1 day work=1/(52x)
As after adding 300 men, days reduces to 52-21=31, i.e. up to 17 days 'x' men works & for another 14 days 'x+300' men works
So (17/52) + (x+300)*[14/(52x)]=1
On solving, x=200
