Let first x articles are bought for Rs. x/5 and another x articles are bought for Rs. x/4
Thus CP of 2x articles= x/5 + x/4 =Rs. 9x/20
SP of 2x article = 2x*(2/9) = Rs. 4x/9
Loss in this transaction = 9x/20 - 4x/9 = 3
=> (81x - 80x)/180 = 3 or x=540
Hence total number of articles bought=2x= 2*540 =1080
