calculating unit digit we get 21*8=168 ,so 16 is our carry which is added with 20*8 =176(ten's digit),then carry 17 is added with 19*8=169(hundred;s digit).So the answer is 968.

it says that it contains 21 numbers to be added so the last 3 digit is 21*8

The answer will be 968 as:
(21*8) = 168
(20*8) = 160
(19*8) = 152
Now
168 --> 8 remains 16 gets carried
160 + 16 --> 6 remains 17 gets carried
152 + 17 --> 9 remains 16 gets carried
hence the last three digits are 9, 6 and 8.

There are mainly 21 8's in the unit digits then 21x8=168,Here units place value is 8,
there are mainly 20 8's in the ten's place then 20x8=160,but in the above there is 16 then 160+16=176 then 10's place value is 6.
There are mainly 19 8's in the 100's place then 19x8=152 but there is 17 extra from the above,then 152+17=169 then 100's place value is 9.
Therefore the last three digits in the sum is 968.

Given 8+88+888+..........
so in units place there will be 21 8's ,so 21*8=176
7 in units place carry is 17
next column have 20 8's so 20*8=160+16=176
6 in tens place and carry is 17
next column consists of 19 8's, so 19*8=172+17=189
9 in hundreds place
so the last three digit number is 968
