The distance travelled will be

8+(4+4)+(2+2)+(1+1)+.5+.5+.25+.25+....
or
8+8+4+2+1+0.5 ... up to infinity
or
8+(8+4+2+1+0.5 ... up to infinity)

Now (8+4+2+1+0.5 ... up to infinity) is a GP with a=8 and r=1/2=0.5.
sum of GP = a/(1-r) = 8/(1-0.5) = 8/0.5 =16

hence 8+(8+4+2+1+0.5 ... up to infinity) = 8+16 =24

as 8+4+4+2+2+1+1+.5..... infinit
sumation is 8 + GP of ( 8+4+2+1.......infinity)
8+ 8/.5
8+16 = 24

suppose the ball falls from a height of x m
then next time it bounces to a height of x/2 and then falls althrough x/2 height and again bounces back to x/4 height and continues till it comes to rest.
so total distance travelled = x+2(x/2)+2(x/4)+2(x/8).......
=x(1+1+1/2 +1/2^2+....)
=x(1+2)=3x (because 1+1/2+1/4+1/8+... forms an infinite gp whose r

each time ball is travelling the half of the previous one, so sequence is 8,4,2,1,.5,......
it is infinite GP series so
d=8/(1-1/2)=16
