let the original amount be x.
then first julie takes 1/3 of x amount left is=2/3 of x=2/3x
then alice takes 1/3 of 2/3x, amount left over is 2/3 of 2/3x = 4/9x
then tina takes 1/3 of 4/9x, amount left is 4/9x*2/3= 8/27x which is given to be 8,
so 8/27x=8,,that gives x=27..which was the original amount..

Answer = $27, Julia took $9 so remaining $18. Then Alice took $6 so remaining $12. Then, finally Tina took $4. So, remaining $8 at the end.

If tips in the beginning=x $
Julie took (1/3)*x ,remaining=2x/3
Alice took (1/3)(2x/3)=2x/9, remaining=4x/9
Tina took (1/3)(4x/9)=4x/27, remaining=8x/27
As remaining amount=$8= 8x/27, x=27
