Let the number be 'x'
Let 'y' equal to the number which 'x' exceeds 25% of itself
that is 'y'=125% of 'x' and it is equal to x+40
so x+40=125% of x.
therefore the number 'x'=160 is the answer

If no is x, then
x exceeds 25% of x by 40.

as per condition

x= 0.25x +40
0.75x =40
x= 40/0.75 = 40*100/75 = 160/3

to solve this equation do the following:
start with:
x = .2x + 40
subtract .2x from both sides of this equation to get:
.8x = 40
divide both sides of that equation by .8 to get:
x = 40/.8
simplify to get:
x = 50

x is your number.
check the number out by applying the logic of the original statement to it.

20% of 50 is equal to 10.
50 exceeds 10 by 40.
your answer is good.

x-20x/100=40
it is like after dividing the value
x-1x/5=40
5x-x=200
x=50
