An army contingent of 1232 members is to march behind an army band of 64 members in a parade. The two group are to march in the same number of columns. What is the maximum number of columns in which they can march.

Solution

To find the maximum number of columns, we find H.C.F. (1232, 64)
By using Euclid,s algorithm to find their H.C.F.
the maximum number of columns in which they can march in 16

we have to divide 1232 and 64 member into equal number of columns
so,
let x be the number of columns
let y and z be the number of rows of 64 member group and 1232 members group respectively.
so,
x*y=64
x*z=1232
when we simplify 1232/64 then we get 77/4
therefore, y=4 and z=77
so now solving above equation for x we get,
x=16
hence option 6
