A man wishes to invest Rs.2490. He invests Rs.900 in 7/2% stock at 75, Rs.850 in 3% at 68 and the remainder in 6% stock. If the total yield from his investment is 5%, at what price does he buy the 6% stock?

Solution

Income from 7/2% stock at 75 = Rs. 7/2*75 * 900 = Rs.42
Income from 3% stock at 68 = Rs. 3/68 * 850 = Rs. 37.50
Total income from these two stocks = Rs 79.50
But total income from the three stocks Rs. 5/100 * 2490 = Rs.124.50
Therefore Income from the third stock Rs. (124.50 - 79.50) = Rs.45
Investment in this case = Rs.2490 - (900+850) = Rs.740
If income is Rs.45, investment = Rs.740
If income is Rs.6, investment = Rs. 740/45 * 6 = 296/3
So he buys 6% stock at 296/3

invest rs.75,income= 7/2
if invest rs.900, income=((7/2)*(900)*(1/75))= rs.42

In 3% stock @ rs.68
invest rs.68,income=rs.3

If invest rs.850, income =((3/68)*850)= rs.37.50

Investment in 6% stock= (2490-900-850)= rs.740
Total income=5% of 2490= rs.124.50
income from 6% stock=(124.50-42-37.50)= rs.45

If investment is 75 then income=7/2
so on the investment of 900 income=7/2*1/75*900=42

similarly
in3%stock at 68
the income on the incvestment of 68=3
the income from 850=3/68*850=37.5
the remaining investmnent=2490-900-850=720
the total income is 5% of 2490=124.50
income from 6%stock is=124.5-37.5-42=45
now in 6%stock
if income is 45 investment =740
if income is 6 investment=740/45*6=296/3
market value of 6%stock=296/3
