The area of a rectangle is thrice that of a square. Length of the rectangle is 40 cm and the breadth of the rectangle is 3/2 times that of the side of the square. The side of the square in cm is

Solution

Let the side of the square be x cm. Then,
40* 3/2 x = 3x^2
or
x = 20
So, side of the sq = 20 cm

40 * 3/2 * a = 3* a * a

Let the side of the square be y cm
Then,breadth of the rectangle = 3y/2 cm
Area of the rectangle = (40 * 3y/2) cm^2
= 60y cm^2
It is given that the area of rectangle is thrice that of square
So, 60y = 3y^2
=> y = 20
Side of the square = 20 cm
