Two poles of height 12 m. and 4 m. are situated in such a way that the sun rays through the top of a pole also passes through the top of other. The distance between poles is? (It is given that the sun rays make an angle of 45 degree with the horizon)

Solution

If we make a triangle from top of the pole of height 12 m. upto ground than an other similar triangle
is also obtained from the top of smaller pole. If distance between the poles is x,
then 12/4 = 12/(12-x)
On solving we get x = 8

height of the pole 1 is 12 so the base is 12m for the big triangle
height of the post 2 is 4 so the base length is 4
diff is 8 so the distance b/w poles is 8m

It means top 8 m of larger pole as height and distance between two poles as base is making a right angled triangle with base angle 45 degrees.

Hence three angles will be 45,45 and 90.

So base and height of that triangle will be equal.

so distance between two poles will be equal to 8 m.

If ABC (= 12 m) and XY (=4 m) are two poles separated by distance "d", and AB= 8 m and BC= 8m. in such a way that rays are touching A and X and making angle of 45 deg with ground.

Then ABX is a right angled triangle with AB= 8m, BX=d and < AXB= 45 degrees and < ABX = 90 deg, then AB=BX= d= 8 m as < XAB will be 45 deg and triangle ABX is an issoceless triangle.
