A merchant has 144 kg of sugar, part of which he sells at 3% loss and the rest at 9% profit. He gains 5% on the whole. What is the quantity of sugar sold at 3% loss?

Solution

(Quantity of Cheaper)/(Quantity of Dearer) = (Price of Dearer - Mean Price)/(Mean Price - Price of Cheaper)

(Quantity of Cheaper)/(Quantity of Dearer) = (109 - 105)/(105-97) = 4/8 = 1/2

Total Quantity = 144 KG

The quantity sold at 3% loss is = (1/3) * 144 = 48 Kgs

Quantity of Cheaper/Quantity of dearer = Price of Dearer-Mean Price/Mean Price- Price of Cheaper = (109-105)/(105-97)=4/8=1/2
Quantity of Cheaper = 144*1/3=48Kg.
Hence my option is 8.

Quantity of Sugar sold at 3% loss = {(9-5)/(9+3}) * 144
= (4/12) * 144
= 48 kg

let x be the loss
so, 97*x + 109(144-x)= 105*144
12x=576
x=48

Let c.p b Rs.144.
Let the part sold @ 3% loss b X kgs.
Then part sold @ 9% profit will be (144-X) kgs.
so according 2 the given condition
5/100*144= 9/100*(144-X) - 3/100*X. Simplifying v get 12X=144*(9-5)
X= 144*4/12=48. so option 8

let 144kg = 100Rs/- = > 1kg = 0.6944Rs
let x part of 144 kg sold at 3% loss
S.P of x kg = (100-3)/100 *(0.6944 * x)
S.P of 144-x kg =(100+9)/100*(0.6944 * (144-x))
given total gain is 5% =>
100+5 =S.P of x kg + S.P. of (144-x kg)
=> 105 = 109-0.7568 * x + 0.6735 * x
=> x = 48kg

sp of 144 kg of sugar at 5% profit=sp of part of sugar whic is sold at 3% loss+ sp of part of sugar which is sold at 9% profit

let x kg sugar sold at 3% loss
so part of sugar sold at 9% profit=144-x
let cp of 1 kg sugar is y Rs
formula of sp=(100+profit)*cp/100

so 105/100*144y=97/100*xy + 109/100*(144-x)*y
solve and get x=48 ans

gain %= (100+9)*(144-x),
loss %=(100-3)x,
(100+9)*(144-x)+(100-3)*x= 144(100+5).
x=48.

p is the per unit cost then we have
p*x*.97+p*(144-x)*1.09=p*1.05*144
on solving x=48
