Simran went to buy 13 chocolates worth Rs. x. She gave Rs.500 rupee note to the shopkeeper to buy the chocolates then shopkeeper gave rest of the money in the denominations of 50 paise, 5 rupee, and 10 rupees. If the ratio of the number of coins is 16:19:15 respectively. Then what is the price of three chocolates?

Solution

Possible coins = (16, 19, 15) & (32, 38, 30)
If (16, 19, 15) = 0.50*16+ 5*19 + 10*15 = 253

Chocolate cost = 500 - 253 = 247

Case 2: (32, 38, 30) = 0.50*32+ 5*38 + 10*30 = 506 which is more than 200 rupees so wrong

So cost of 13 chocolates = Rs 247

Cost of 3 Chocolates = (247/13)*3 = Rs 57

Price for 1 chocolate = x
Cost of 13 chocolates = 13 x
Change given are of denominations of 50 paise (p), 5 rs, 10 rs
And that to in the ratio 16:19:15
So,
Change given = Multiple of (16 *50 p +19 * 5 rs + 15*10 rs)
= Multiple of (8 rs+ 95 rs + 150 rs)
= Multiple of (253 rs)
Which can be 253*1 only

Because 253*(2 or greater) makes it as more than 506

So change = 253

Then, price = 500-253 = 247

And this is for 13 chocolates

So, cost of 1 chocolate = x = 247/13 = 19

Then, cost of 3 chocolates = 3 x = 57
= Option (7)

Let the total money returned to Simran is (16*0.5+5*19+15*10)m=(500-x)
so, x=(500-253m)
now, the possible value of m is 1
so, x= 247
so, unit price is (247/13)= 19
hence, price of 3 items is 19*3= 57.

Let us assume one chocolate price is X Rs.
Then 13 chocolate price is 13X Rs.
13X=500-Y
Where Y=0.5*16+19*5+15*10=253
13X=247
X=19
So total price of three chocolate is 57
