Isha’s grandfather was 5 times older to her 4 years ago. He would be three times of her age 8 years from now. 7 years ago, what was the ratio of Isha’s age to that of her grandfather’s age?

Solution

Suppose Isha's grandfathers age is x and Isha's age is y

4 years ago
x-4 = 5*(y-4)
=> x = 5y - 16 --(i)

8 years from now
x+8 = 3*(y+8)
=> x = 3y + 16 --(ii)

(i) = (ii)
5y - 16 = 3y + 16
=> 2y = 32
=> y = 16
So x = 64

7 years ago
Age of Grandfather = 64 - 7 = 57
Age of Isha = 16-7 = 9
Ratio of ages = 9:57 = 3 : 19

x-4=5(y-4)
after 8 years age would be
x+8=3(y+8)
on solving eq 1 and 2 we get x=64 y =16

let Isha's present age be X and grandfather's be Y
four years ago Isha age is X-4
from given first condtion, 5(X-4)=Y-4
and 2nd condition, 3(X+8)=Y+8
solving those equations we get X=16; Y=64
now 7years ago their ages will be 16-7=9 and 64-7=57
now ratio is 9:57 = 3:19

4 yrs ago, Isha's age= i-4
her Grandfather's age=g-4
ATQ,
g-4=5(i-4)
Similarly, 8 yrs from now,
g+8 = 3 (i+8)
solving these 2 equations, we get, i=16 and g=64
