Isha’s grandfather was 5 times older to her 9 years ago. He would be two times of her age 18 years from now. 12 years ago, what was the ratio of Isha’s age to that of her grandfather’s age?

Solution

Suppose Isha's grandfathers age is x and Isha's age is y

9 years ago
x-9 = 5*(y-9)
=> x = 5y - 36 --(i)

18 years from now
x+18 = 2*(y+18)
=> x = 2y + 18 --(ii)

(i) = (ii)
5y - 36 = 2y + 18
=> 3y = 54
=> y = 18
and x = 54

12 years ago
Age of Grandfather = 54 - 12 = 42
Age of Isha = 18-12 = 6
Ratio of ages = 6:42 = 1 : 7
