The age difference between two brothers is 6 years. After 6 years the ratio between the age is 8:5
What would be the sum of their present ages?

Solution

Let a = the age of the younger brother now
a+6 = the age of the older brother now
given:
In 6 years:
a+6 = the age of the younger brother
a+6+6 = the age of the older brother

(a+12)/(a+6)=8/5
=> 5a + 60 = 8a + 48
=> 3a = 12
=> a = 4
=> a+6=10

Sum = 10+4 = 14
