A swimming pool is 100 ft. by 50 ft. and has an average depth of 6 ft. By the end of an average summer day, the water level drops an average of 1 ft. How many cubic feet of water are lost each day?

Solution

When the pool is full in the morning, it has
100 ft. x 50 ft. x 6 ft. =30,000 cubic feet of water.
But it loses 1/6 of its water per day, from a depth of 6 ft. to 5 ft.
