A shopkeeper earned a profit equal to cost price of 6 items while selling 36 items together. Each item is marked at 20% above the cost price. If discount given on each item is Rs. 40, then the cost price of each item is:

Solution

Let CP of each item =Rs. x
MP of each item = 1.2x
SP of each item = (1.2x - 40) ----(i)
CP of 36 items = 36x
SP of 36 items = (36x + 6x) = 42x
.'. SP of each item = 42x/36 = (7/6)*x ----(ii)
Comparing SP of (i) & (ii), (1.2x - 40) = (7/6)*x
Solving, we get x=1200

Total cost = 36c. Profit = 6c. Sale price = 42c.
Given information can be written as
36( 1.2c - 40 ) = 42c. Solving , c = 1200

Selling Price of 36=36S=(36+6)C
Cost Price of 36=36C
M.P of 36= (36*1.2)C
S.P of 36 =43.2C-36*40=36S
43.2C-36*40=42C
1.2C = 36*40
C=36*40/1.2=1200

Let Marked price be y and cost price be x
Acc. to question
y = (120/100)x
36[(120/100)x - 40 - x] = 6x
on solving,
x = 1200
