Sum of the ages of Surendra and Mahendra is 74. If difference of their ages ranges from 6 to 12 (only integers), then total number of possible answers are. (All ages are integral values only). Consider that Surendra is elder than Mahendra.

difference can be taken as S-M=6,8,10,12 only as their ages are in integers.
thus the possible answers are S=40,41,42,43
M=34,33,32,31

and their differences is
X-Y=6

on solving we get
x=40 and Y=34

X=43 and Y=31

x+y=74 & x-y=6 gives x=40 & y= 34
x+y=74 & x-y=7 doesn't give only integer value.
x+y=74 & x-y=8 gives x=41 & y= 33
x+y=74 & x-y=9 doesn't give only integer value.
x+y=74 & x-y=10 gives x=42 & y= 32
x+y=74 & x-y=11 doesn't give only integer value.
x+y=74 & x-y=12 gives x=43 & y= 31

S - M = n{6,7,8,9,10,11,12} = 7
S - M has to be an even number
so S - M = n{6,8,10,12} = 4

x+y=74
if x-y= 6, then x = 40, y = 34
if x-y= 8, then x = 41, y = 33
if x-y= 10,then x = 42, y = 32
if x-y= 12,then x = 43, y = 31

hence there are 4 such possibilities, we cannot take x-y as 7,9 and 11 because if we then solve x+y and x-y we will get the values for x and y as non integers.

sum of the ages I.e (S+M) = 74
difference in ages (S-M) = 6 ,7,8,9,10,11,12
now S+M = 74
and S-M = 6
add both 2S =80 is min I.e S = 40
and S-M = 12 is max difference
Add S+M and S-M
2S = 86 i.e S =43
so possible answers are 40,41,42,43 i.e 4 possible answers

let the age of surrender,mahendra be s,m respectively..
s+m=74
when s-m=6
then solving both equations we get s=40 m=34
when s-m=7 then after solving s=40.5 and m=33.5
but it is given that ages can be integer only so it cant be possible answer
same will be the case when s-m=some odd no.
so total no. of numbers between 6 and 12 including both=7
odd no.s=3(viz 7,9,11)
for every value of differenec between s and m we will get answer
so no. of possible answers=7-3=4
