=>y=8-x...(1)

and x^2+y^2=34
=>x^2+(8-x)^2=34[putting y=8-x]
=>x^2+{8^2-(2*8*x)+x^2}=34
=>x^2+64-16x+x^2=34
=>2x^2-16x+30=0
=>x^2-8x+15=0
=>x^2-5x-3x+15=0[Upon middle term factoring]
=>(x-5)(x-3)=0
Hence, x=5 or x=3.
When x=5 y=8-5=3 [From equation (1)]
and when x=3 y=8-3=5
In both cases x*y=5*3=3*5=15.
