A Shopkeeper divides an ice-cream brick in two halves, then cut one of the halves into several smaller portions of equal size. Each of the smaller portions weights 12 grams. The shopkeeper now has a total of 5 portions. How heavy was the original briick? ANSWER : 96

first of two equal parts done ..
one part is divided into smaller parts of 12gms each ..
total 5 portions means that part was divided into 4 parts , means the weight of 1 half part is
4*12 = 48gm.
now the total weight of ice cream is 48*2 =96 gm

two equal parts,lets take second equal part is divided into 5parts each part is 12gms...so 12*5=6o two parts are equalna2nd partis 60,then 1st one also 60.60+60=120

Let the weight of the original brick be 'x' grams.
After dividing the ice-cream brick in two halves,weight of each half=x/2 grams.
Now,let 'n' be the number of several smaller portions of equal size after cutting one of the halves into the same.
Each smaller portion weighs 12 grams.
So, n*12=x/2
=>n=x/24........(1).
Again,the shopkeeper now has a total of 5 portions.
Then,
n+1=5
=>(x/24)+1=5 [Putting the value of 'n' from equation (1)]
=>(x/24)=4
=>x=24*4
=>x=96.
Therefore,weight of the original brick=96 grams.

simply cutting the brick... as it is not written that it should be cut into two equal halves
