If number of days to complete the work for Son=x ,father=x-40
5(x-40)=x or x=50
Number of days required if both work together=1/[(1/10)+(1/50)]=50/6= 8 1/3

Let the , no. of days taken by father to complete the work is X then the no. of days required by son is 5x... Now the difference is 40 as 5x-x=40
Therefore, x is 10 .. Hence son will do the same work in 50 days.
When they work together they complete the work in 50/6 days.. Answer

let the father work x days
time required to cmplte work by the son be 5x
then,5x-x=40,x=10
means father work 10 days and the son has to work for 50 days to cmplte the same work
both will do
1/10+1/50=6/50
i.e. 50/6 days

father take 40days to solve 1(full work)
so in 1 day he can solve 1/40
son take 200 days to solve 1
so in 1 day he can solve 1/200
so in 1 day if they both work they do(1/40+1/200)=3/100
so they do 3/100 in 1day
=>they do 1(full wok) in 100/3 day
