Let x be the original price of article.
Shopkeeper increases the marked price by 40%

So selling price = x + 40/100*x = 140/100*x = 1.4x

He then gives a discount of 10%
Selling price = 1.4x - 10/100*1.4x
= 1.4x - 0.14x
= 1.26x

Gain % = (SP - CP)/CP*100
= (1.26x - x)/x*100
= 26%
