Parihar starts from home for his office. He travels downhill, then on flat ground and then uphill to reach his office. During this, the time taken to travel uphill and on flat ground is the same. It takes him 3 hrs. to reach the office. On the way back to home Mr. Parihar takes 3 hrs 10 min to reach home along the same route. The speed on downhill is 60 km/hr, on flat ground is 48 km/hr and uphill is 40 km/hr.

Q1: What is the distance between his home and his office?
Q2: By what distance should his office be shifted so that the time taken to go to the office is same as time taken to reach home from the office?

Solution

Let the time taken to go to uphill and to the flat ground is t hrs.
then distance on uphill = 40t
on flat = 48t
on downhill = 60(3-2t)
now for return journey uphill and downhill will be exchanged
time taken to uphill = 60(3-2t)/40
to flat = 48t/48 = t
to downhill = 40t/60
so according to given condition (60(3-2t)/40)+t+(40t/60)=3 hrs 10 min. = 19/6
so ((9-6t)/2)+t+(2t/3)=19/6 or 27-18t+6t+4t=19 or t=1 hrs.
on taking the value of t, total distance =40t+48t+60(3-2t)=180-32t=148 km.
now for making time of the two roots same length of uphill and downhill should be same
in the present case length of uphill = 40*1 = 40
and that of downhill = 60(3-2) = 60
so 60-40 = 20, office should be shifted to 20 km.
