let number is x.now follow the steps:

1.number is decreased by 20% so now number is: x - x*20% = x - 0.2*x = 0.8*x .

2.number is increased by 20% so now number is:
0.8*x + 0.8*x*20% = 0.8*x + 0.8*x*0.2 = 0.96*x.

So number obtained by taking the above two steps alternatively in a number = 0.96*x

& the number itself = x.

therefore ratio will be = 0.96*x/x = 0.96.
