Let merchant has bought sugar at rate of re.1 per kg.
so total C.P. is Rs.100.
Now he sell x kg at profit of 7% and (100-x) kg at profit of 17%.
C.P. of x kg is Rs.x.
So S.P. of x kg should be x + x*7/100 = 1.07x.
And
C.P. of (100-x) kg is Rs.(100-x).
S.P. of (100-x) kg should be (100-x) + (100-x)*17/100 =1.17*(100-x) = (117-1.17x).
Total S.P.= 1.07x + (117-1.17x)= 117-0.1x.
Since Total C.P. is rs.100, So S.P. at 10% whole gain will be Rs.110.
Equating S.P.
117-0.1x=110
0.1x=7
x=70 kg. which will be sold at 7% gain.
So 100-70= 30 kg will be sold at 17% gain.
So Ans is 30kg.

the merchant has total of 100 kg sugar. So,let first part is x kg. Then, the other part is (100-x)kg. find the profit in Rs,and the total profit is 10% of 100 kg.the sum of the profits is 10. We have got the value of x.now find the value of (100-x).This is the answer as x=70.So (100-x)=30 kg.

=>7% profit on x + 17% profit on 100-x = 10% profit 100 kg sugar

This is a weighted average/mixture problem.
We need to combine the sugar sold at a 7% profit with the sugar sold at a 17% profit so that the mixture yields a 10% profit.
Using alligation:

The proportion of each element in the mixture is the distance between the percentage attributed to the other element in the mixture and the percentage attributed to the final mixture.

Proportion sold at a 7% profit = 17-10 = 7.
Proportion sold at a 17% profit = 10-7 = 3.
Portion at a 7% profit: Portion at a 17% profit = 7:3.

Since 7+3 = 10, 7/10 of the sugar is sold at a 7% profit.

let us suppose the merchant sells x kg of sugar at 17% profit.
then, rest 100-x kg will be sold at 7% profit.
